Mardan History, Location & Population

 District Mardan

Mardan is the most famous and richest district of K-P-K province. It is famous for the hospitality of its public. Hence, this city is known as the "City of Men". It is considered among the oldest inhabited regions in the world, where people belonging to different tribes were living. It is the 2nd largest city of KPK. Mardan is a city with very high traditions, monumental history and civilization. The reason for the fame of this wonderland is a Sufi saint named as “Peer Mardan Shah”, who had come to this area for the purpose of preaching Islam.

According to an authentic historian, Quraysh Kabir, Cyrus waved the Iranian flag over the area 2500 years ago and considered it a territory of Iran. According to his report, 2500 years ago, an industrious city was situated over here.

Location

This city is located on the north bank of the Kalyani River, which is connected to Nowshera, Dargai and Peshawar by road and rail. It is almost 60 km apart from Peshawar. 

Protected areas of Malakand are located on its North, in North East lies the Buner District, Swabi lies on East of Mardan, in the South of Mardan city there lies Nowshera district and Charsadda lies in its west. This city was given a status of division in 1988. The subdivisions of Mardan and Swabi are included in this division.

Population

According to the census of 2017, the total population here is 2,373,000. Apart from Muslim natives, Hindus, Sikhs and Christians also live here. Most of the people living in this city belong to the Muhammad and Yusufzai tribes. Younas Khan, a famous cricketer of Pakistani cricket team, also belongs to this region. This city is also honored because it is the biggest city of Pakhtuns in the world. Mardan is considered the center of the Yusufzai tribe. But besides Yusufzai, Khanak, Muhammad, Afridi, Tabnool, Lodhi and Awan tribes also live here.

Culture

The languages spoken here are Pashto, Urdu, Punjabi and Saraiki. English, Hindi, Arabic and Chinese languages are also learnt among different students as practicing languages.

Mardan is famous for farming all over the country. Sugarcane and tobacco crops are grown in abundance here. The Oranges here are well-known around the world for their flavor and sweetness. 



The people of this area also have a special attachment for music. It is common to have traditional dance at festivals and events. Rabab has a unique place in music.

Climate

In Mardan mostly the temperature is very hot. The summer season goes so long and boiling while the winters come for a short period of time. Here, the average temperature varies from 27°C to 39.6°C. 

Along with this varying temperature, this city is also blessed with rainfall. This natural rain drops refreshes the hearts of people. Hence, the best time to visit Mardan is from September or October.

There is no airport in Mardan, but you can avail this facility from Bacha Khan International airport, which lies very close to Mardan. This airport is about 6km distant from Mardan city.

No doubt, there isn’t any airport in the city but the most famous historic railway station “Mardan junction” is still present in the city. This is a railway track constructed in the British Era. It still has the status of a junction station. This station connects Malakand and Dargai to one side of the railway line and Charsadda and Nowshera to the other side. However, this railway track is now used for non-passenger trains (goods trains).

The meaning of Takht Bhai is different in Sanskrit and Persian languages. Takht means a crow and Bhai means Upper level, in Sanskrit language. Hence, the meaning of Takht Bhai is a crow flying high in the air. While, in Persian Takht means “Throne” and Bhai means “Water”.

Archaeologists believe that the site was built during the reign of ancient kings. It is said to have been built by a Buddhist ruler. These ruins were discovered in 1836 during the British Era and its regular excavations began in 1852. In 1980, UNESCO declared it as a global heritage. The ruins of the monks' dormitories and seminaries in these ruins seem to have been used for the promotion of knowledge.

Jamal Garhi

Jamal Garhi is located on Katlang Road, 13 km from Mardan District. This is a beautiful ministry, a small town and the central stoop. Its prominence is the 3,000 year old Buddhist relics here. These ruins are known as The Jamal Garhi Kandarat. In Pashto, these ruins are known as Kafiro Koti. 

These ruins were discovered by the most famous archaeologist of the time, Sir Alexander Cunningham, during British rule in 1848. Although it was open to government officials in 1852. When Lieutenant Crominton started digging it in 1871, ancient Buddhist relics were found here, which still are considered the reason for the fame of this place. As soon as all these things were discovered, the British government took action and all this became the adornment of the British Museum and the Indian Museum of Calcutta.

This is a small village situated close to Takht Bhai in Mardan. It is a beautiful site with a number of archeological thrones which attracts tourists. This site is located near Takht Bhai and is at a distance of 70 km from Peshawar. This historical site contains the ruins of Buddhists which were built during the reign of Kushan Khan and are still present in a strong position. Mardan Museum

This museum of District Mardan is famous for Gandhara and Buddha art, which was established in 1995 under the supervision of Commissioner, the son of Riaz Noor of Mardan division. Later on, in 2006 a part of land was granted by the Mardan Government which was inaugurated and opened to the public in 2009. When you enter the first hall of the ground floor, you will see a variety of ancient books which were written in different languages. These books were written about the religious teachings of different civilizations during that period.

Bacha Khan Monument is a memorial located at College Chowk, Mardan. The monument was built by Mr. Haider Khan Hoti, who was a member of the Awami National Party during 2010-11. Sartaj Aziz

Sartaj Aziz was born on 7th February 1929 in Mardan during British rule. Sartaj Aziz served Pakistan as an economist, a member of the Federal Cabinet, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission of Pakistan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, a member of the Federal Senate and an Advisor for the National Security Council. He also remained the Minister of Finance from August 1990 to June 1993.

He was the only member of cabinet who opposed the response against the Indian nuclear test. He, along with politics, was heavily involved in literary work. He worked as the Vice Chancellor of Beacon House University in 2004 and remained there up till 2013. Moreover, he wrote his own book which was named as “Between Dreams and Realities”, and published it in 2009.

Ahmed Khan Bahadur

Ahmed khan Bahadur is a great politician born on 9th July 1967 in district Mardan. He got his early education from government school in Mardan and got the degree of B.A from Government Post Graduate College Mardan. After that he went to Islamabad and shows his interest in LL.B from Muslim Law College.

He worked hard as a politician and played a vital role for the success of Pakistan. Ahmed khan Bahadur belongs to Awami National Party at the present time. Previously, he became a member of KPK assembly, three times whenever the Pakistan general elections were held in 2008, 2013 and 2018. He is also working as a member of provincial assembly (MPA) of KPK since 2013.

Muhammad Yusuf Banuri

Allama Muhammad Yusuf Banuri was born on 7th may 1908 in Mahabat Abad, NWFP British India. His hometown was Mardan. He got his early education from his father and the higher education from Darul-Uloom Deoband. He did Masters in Hadith (Dora-e-Hadith) from Jamia Islamia Talimuddin Dabhel. He was a Pakistani Islamic Scholar and the founder of Jamia Uloom UL Islamia. He wrote many books but was famous for Maarif Ul Sunan Sharah and Sunan Al Tirmidhi.

He worked as Sheikh Ul Hadith at Jamia Islamia Talimuddin Dabhel and also worked as Sheikh Ul Tafseer at Darul Uloom in 1954. He was also selected as Ameer of World Council for the Protection of Prophethood (Almi Majlis Tahaffuz Khtm-e-Nabuwat). Hence, he worked hard for the spread of Islam and his services cannot be for-granted. He died on 17th of October in 1977, Rawalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan and was buried in ancestor’s cemetery.

Ameer Haider Khan Hoti

Ameer Haider Khan Hoti is a Pakistani politician born on 5th Feb 1971 in Mardan. He is the son of Azam Khan Hoti, who was the Federal Minister of KPK. He got his early education from the government school and higher education from Aitchison College. He got his degree of graduation from Edwards College. Then, he started his political career in 1990.

He is a member of Pakistan National Assembly since 2018. This was a 2nd opportunity for him. For the very first time, he availed the same opportunity of being member of National Assembly from June 2013 to May 2018. Previously, he remained a member of the Provincial Assembly of KPK from 2008 to 2013. Currently, he is working as a member of Awami National Party. 

Peer Gohar Ali Shah

Syed Peer Gohar Ali Shah was born on 8th December 1931 in Pirano Daga, Mardan. He was known as Shair-e-Aman (poet of peace). He had a great work in poetry and songwriting and always wrote in Pashto. He contributed to the Independence Movement of Pakistan through his poetry and articles which were written under his pen name Shilmani or Silani

He got his primary education during the British Rule and completed his masters after the independence of Pakistan. Another writer, Aftab Gul Banrr wrote about all his life in the book named as “Gouhariyat”. He wrote much of his work in the presence of Quaid Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Abdul Rub Nishtar. He wrote 8 books on Sufism among which “Taswaf-e-Noorani” got much importance. Along with Sufism and Islamic Writings, he also wrote for Drama and Radio Pakistan. President at that time, Zia Ul Haq gave him the award for Presidential Pride of Performance because of his literary work for Pakistan.

He involved himself in literary activities and delivered his knowledge among others. He remained the chairman of Mardan Adabi Jirga. He also worked for Mardan Art Council which was actually a cultural event. He had an unforgettable work in Abdul Wali Khan University. He died on 4th January 2013 in the same city of his birth.

Muhammad Akbar Khan Hoti

Nawabzada Akbar Khan Hoti was born in the Nawab’s family on 8th February 1956. He is the son of Nawabzada Abdul Ghafur Khan Hoti. His forefathers were the Nawab of Hoti Palace. Because of this reason, Akbar Khan is known as Nawabzada. He remained the Pakistani Police Officer from 2011 to 2013. After that he got a job as Director General of FIA. He worked in FIA from 2014 to 2016. He is a great man who stands by Pakistan against different crimes.

Riaz Afridi, who belonged to Peshawar, started his career from his tour to Sri Lanka along with the National under-19 team in 2001. Shahid Afridi

His full name is Muhammad Shahid khan Afridi, who is famous as “boom boom” and “Lala” in cricket grounds. He is considered as the all time successful cricketer of Pakistan who bats with left hand while bowling with right hand. The one played against Kenya on 12th October 1996 was a player who became famous in industry when he made a century on 37 balls while playing against Sri Lanka and jerked the world’s cricket teams with his success.

He had played 27 test matches, 389 ODI matches and 82 T20 matches in his complete career. He also had scored 5 test centuries, 6 ODI centuries and 4 T20 50’s in his successful career over international level. In March 2014, he set up a charity under his own name “Shahid Afridi Foundation”, which is still struggling for health and education in Pakistan.

Samar Haroon Bilour

Samar Haroon Bilour was a female Pakistani member of the provincial assembly of KPK. She was elected in 2018 by the constituency PK-78 held in October, 2018. She was the first woman of KPK who became a politician in the last 16 years. Her husband and father In law became the victim to terrorism which forced her to join politics. After that she was also selected as a provincial secretary of Awami National Party of KPK in June 2020.

Rehman Baba

Jansher Khan

Jansher Khan was born on 15 June, 1969, in Peshawar. His father was a store-keeper on payroll of Pakistan air force. He started playing squash at the age of 11. At 16, he won the world’s junior championship for the first time in 1986 and after that again in 1988.between these two titles, he won the “World Open '' title in 1987. At 18, he beat the world’s no.1 squash player “Jahangir Khan'' in Hong Kong. He was awarded “Pride of Performance '' in 1988. Jansher was famous for his lighting, quick reflexes and movement around the court. He won 99 professional titles, highest of all the players of squash. He was considered the world’s no.1 squash player for more than 10 continuous years. In 1993, he was awarded “Sitara-e-Imtiaz” by the Pakistan Government, and was awarded “Hilal-e-Imtiaz '' in 1997. He officially announced his retirement from Squash in 2001.

Abdul Rub Nishtar

The reliable companion of Quaid e Azam and the hero of Pakistan movement, Abdul Rub Nishtar, spent his life through thick and thin. He had been the planner of Kala Bagh Dam and the former governor of Punjab.

He was actually born in Peshawar in the house of Abdul Halal Kakar. He completed his early education from mission high school, Namak Mandi, Peshawar. Onwards, he completed graduation from Adward College. He had a great interest in poetry from his childhood. In 1922, he created a literary council along with some of his companions and named it as “Muslim Literary Society”. A member of Imran Khan’s Cabinet, Doctor Sania Nishtar, is grand-daughter of Abdul Rub Nishtar.

In 1929, when the elections for Peshawar Municipal Community were held in Peshawar, he was elected as its member for the very first time. Even after independence, he had made countless efforts to benefit Pakistan and participated in the development of Pakistan.
